Balmaha
The name Balmaha (Gaelic: Baile Mo Thatha) means 'the pass of Saint Mo-Cha’.
Now named the pass of Balmaha is a narrow route between hills at the north end of the village which goes north along Loch Lomond. The saint referred to is Kentigerna, patron saint of the parish who was revered especially on the nearby nature reserve island of Inchcailloch ("Isle of the old woman"). Mo-Cha was a medieval Gaelic pet name used for the patron saint of the parish, Kentigerna, who is also the namesake of St Maha’s well on Inchcailloch Island.
Balmaha, a village on the east side of Loch Lomond is 21 miles north of Glasgow and a welcomed pitstop for refreshments from the Lochside Walk part of the West Highland Way. The boatyard and bay are popular with paddle boarders, and boat trips leave from Balmaha going to Luss, Balloch and Inchcailleach Island.
